Time and Space In Shamanic Practice

earth horizon from spaceTime in space are relative in the Shamanic belief. Those who practice shamanic techniques regularly find that many things can be accomplished in a short period of time. And people often return from their shamanic journeys with surprise at how “it seemed like I was gone longer then that” or “I didn’t think I had been gone that long.”

Time and space are also considered relative in science. (Meaning not set in stone but flexible and changeable. Lets say compressible.) But we don’t want to go into Quantum Physics here… So we’ll sum it up that the shamanic journeyer can take advantage of these principles because in the journey you aren’t bound to the rules of matter/the physical form, but can instead follow the rules of energy.

When on a journey great “distances” can be crossed quickly. Time can expand or contract, so that you can accomplish what is needed in the time available, and the shaman can go to where he or she is needed.

Long Distance Healing

man walking roadIn a long distance healing, a shaman healer will journey to where you are, and perform a healing on you in a similar way to what they would do if they were right there with you in physical form.

People may or may not have sensations when this healing is occurring, depending on the person’s sensitivity. Also, because time is relative, the person being healed may not receive the effects of the healing in the moment in which the shaman is performing the healing. The healing may be “delivered” at a different time or date.

Healing such as soul retrieval, shamanic extraction, power animal retrieval, as well as any number of healing can be done at a distance by the healer for his or her client. The healer may also simply send healing energy to the person. Healing can be sent by a group of people to an individual, in a similar way to how a group prayer is performed.

Does it work?

Long Distance Shamanic Healing Globe in Tiny HandsRegardless as to whether it makes sense to our every day thinking, long distance healing is reported to work well. There are certainly some practitioners who are more skilled at it then others, just as with anything. But there are a significant amount of people who have reported powerful healing results when they have received long distance healing. It also should be noted that shamanic healing is not the only healing modality which uses long distance healing. Reiki, for instance, utilizes long distance healing.

Many long distance healers will state somewhere that they offer this service, but you can always ask. Some healers specialize in long distance healing only. As with any healing use your own judgment when selecting a healer for long distance healing.

Why long distance?

mountain reflection mirror waterPeople do not always have success finding a healer who is close by. Long distance healing offers the potential for an individual who is in a far removed location, or a location where such healing services seem unavailable, to receive healing from a shaman regardless of the distances.

It also allows an individual to receive healing from a shaman that they particularly want to work with. The use of long distance healing can also be desirable in situations when it is not suitable to have a healer in the same place as the person being healed or directly touching the client. Such as if the person to be healed has a contagious illness, cannot be touched for some reason, or feels more comfortable with the long distance method. Long distance healing is frequently used with animals, who are sometimes unwilling to sit still long enough to be healed. 😉

It should also be noted that there are certain advantages that may be lost in a long distance healing. When a shaman healer performs a healing in person, they create a sacred space for you. They are there to support you directly in your healing process. There are many good reports about long distance healings, so it is possible that some healers still create this supporting space for their clients regardless of the distance. You should always feel free to discuss your needs and concerns with a potential shamanic healer.

Long Distance Healing — 9 Comments

  1. Hi,
Is it possible to request shaman healing for someone long distance who isn’t aware of the process taking place and who’s generally closed up for any kind of help, medical or alternative? Would it be ethical and effective ?
    Thank you.

    • Good question. It is unethical to work on someone long distance without their permission. It is a type of violation, and the individual can feel attacked even if the feeling is an unconscious one. Its also important to honor individual choices. Just as you might wish to be in charge of the choices in your own life, so must a healer honor the choices of another person. Even if it is difficult to understand why someone is making the choices he or she is making, you have to honor free will.

      • An excellent question. And THANK YOU for addressing this. It isn’t often discussed that, in shamanic practice, our ‘HIPAA’ requirements, the rules that govern the protection of personal information, are even greater than those that western medicine honors. As we are working on the person’s spiritual body with the desire to evoke change in the physical body, we come to know a person far more intimately than western medicine can as we can LITERALLY see inside and come to know our clients very personally. This falls into the ‘just because you can, doesn’t mean you should’ category. Is it possible to work on someone without their knowledge? Yes. Should one work on someone without their knowledge? NEVER. The ethical rules involved in shamanic work are very extensive, and it is a point of honor that they are followed without exception. Failure to do so results in the tarnishing of ones abilities and changes something that is natural and beautiful and and an honor in which to participate into something ugly and damaging to all involved.

    • Hi Long Distance,

Unfortunately, performing work on an individual without their knowing, nor being open to it, is not only unethical, but ineffective. Whatever technique you perform i.E. Power Animal Retrieval, the animal would never be able to “bond” with your client or be helpful, due to her/him not knowing of their existence. I hope this helps!

  2. “When a shaman healer performs a healing in person, they create a sacred space for you.” Would you elaborate on different methods or ways that you create sacred space?

    • The methods that shamanic practitioners use to create a sacred space will vary. But creating sacred space is about filling the room where the healing takes place with very positive healing energy. This is sometimes called an energetic container.

The shaman serves as an anchor for energy and concentrates it around the person being healed. The strength of the container is felt by the client on some level, and the stronger the container the more they will feel safe to open up and release old energy or receive new energy in the healing process.

Every shamanic healer has a process where they fill themselves with energy, either singing, or dancing or drumming, or sitting still while focusing their concentration. Once they are filled they call in more energy, which a shaman sees as the helping spirits, to fill the room. You can visualize this as your guardian spirits standing guard around you why you are being healed.

If the healer works in the same space frequently, they will not have to “call in” as much energy because some of the energy may begin to remain present due to frequent use of the space for healing.

    • In my own practice, whether distance work or working with the person physically present, that sacred space is still created. The person may gain benefit from it in ordinary reality as well as during the time that I am working on the person from a distance.
